Hello, and welcome to our 2026-2027 season of Scandinavian films. This year there has been a changing of the guard as Bette, our long-serving film organizer, has stepped down and passed the reins. My name is K.G. Kline. I am the film critic for 90.5 FM WCBE. I am deeply honored and grateful to be asked to take over the club's movie nights, I hope to do it in much the same fashion as Bette did, and hope the transition appears seamless. The films will continue to be held in the same location at the lutheran church in Upper Arlington and will continue to be shown on the third Friday of the month at 6:30 PM with the same informal snack and conversation time followed by the films beginning promptly at 7:00 PM .

For our November film the choice was obvious.. Come and help us celebrate Norway's first-ever Academy Award for Best International Film as we watch Joachim Trier's amazing "Sentimental Value" ( Affeksjonsverdi ) . Norway has had several Oscar nominations in the past but last March this film finally took home the award with it's subtle but complicated story of an aging Norwegian film director (Stellan Skarsgard) who returns to Oslo to reunite with his two estranged daughters only to surprise them by announcing that he will be filming his next movie inside their family home and wants one of them to star in it Anger, confusion, and generational trauma are the main themes for this film on aging with dignity while healing old wounds The film boasts a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition to Best International Picture the film received a total of nine(!) Oscar nominations, including Best Director, Best Actress (Renate Reinsve), Best Supporting Actor (Skarsgard), two for Best Supporting Actress (Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter ieaas), as well as Best Picture. You won't want to miss this remarkable film. .

In 2027 we will continue the theme of films about Scandinavian directors with one of the greatest Scandinavian films of all time - Ingmar Bergman's autobiographical classic "Fanny and Alexander". Because this film is over three hours long it will be shown in two parts at our March and April screenings. "Fanny and Alexander" was listed by film critic Roger Ebert as one of the 50 greatest films of all time.

Have a Happy Halloween and I look forward to seeing everyone in November.
