About the Movie

In this movie, in the 1930s far-north Sweden, Elle-Marja and her younger sister, Njenna, are separated from their nomadic, indigenous reindeer-breeding/herding family and placed in a government-run boarding school. Although Elle excels academically and wants further education, she is denied support and opportunities by the school-mistress, who reinforces the lack of support for expression of the Sami language and culture and personal development. Elle chooses to leave the boarding-school and to handle the consequences as she persistently tries to define herself as being Swedish not Sami and as a person wanting further education. Her sister chooses another route, that of being and embracing being Sami and herding reindeer. Two different choices and life paths, but are they so totally different??

"Sami Blood" has been described as an insightful, sensitive, moving, though-provoking, fact-based movie. First, a question to consider is what does the movie's title, "Sami Blood", mean? Think of this young woman trying to express her own identity and also going from being a teenager to becoming more of an adult. What has had an impact on her, whether it be challenges, or…? Over what has she had control in her life?

This impactful movie- "Sami Blood", has received many accolades, including 26 Award wins and 18 additional nominations, such as the Guldbagge Awards for Best Actress and Best Screenplay.  This movie also has won awards for Best Director and Best Cinematography and other areas.

Let's hope that you, too, want to join our Scandi Movie Night group to navigate life's journey with young Elle-Merja, also known by her chosen Swedish name, Christina! It's a challenging journey, full of unexpected turns that will get us thinking and feeling and will encourage discussion! The Sami have been part of our Scandinavian heritage and our future...!
