Orienteering: A Great, Outdoors Scandi Adventure for ALL!

Welcome back to the rest of the 2024 orienteering season in Columbus, Ohio, fellow Scandinavians! Get out your calendars! Central Ohio Orienteers (COO) will have events on Sept 14 (at predominately FLAT Sharon Woods Metro Park in nearby Westerville); Oct 19 (Alley Park in Lancaster); Nov 10 (Great Seal State Park, a bit further away in Chillicothe), and in December (date still in the works, Three Creeks Metro Park).

COO's website is here: https://www.centralohioorienteers.org/

Always a good idea to check there for last minute info, like verifying the start locations in the parks.

If anyone would like to make a long day around orienteering, check out Cincinnati (OCIN), Miami Valley (MVOC), and Cleveland (NEOOC) events, too. - They’re just further away. There will be something happening with orienteering almost every weekend in Ohio. Autumn might just be the best season for the woods!

Brain Benefits: Time magazine - and other news outlets - reported on a study specifically done of orienteering and how good it is for our brains. It makes us use so much of our brain to figure out where we are and how to get to the next place we want to go. It is actually good to "get lost" and it is good to get out of the normal routine. Orienteering offers some risk of getting lost while we figure out a pathway, and for sure it gets us out into nature, outside of our daily routines.

As Annie Almstedt, our Scandi-Orienteering Coordinator, says, "It's the perfect sport. I know I am better at it NOW than I was 5 years ago, but I have this crazy hope I can still get better. So, I go as often as I can, all year round. It's good to do hard things!"
